Sisters Red Icon

My next book, coming out in June 2011, is a companion book to SISTERS RED called SWEETLY. SISTERS RED is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood; SWEETLY is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel. Here’s the blurby goodness:

Twelve years ago, Gretchen, her twin sister, and her brother went looking for a witch in the forest. They found something. Maybe it was a witch, maybe a monster, they aren’t sure—they were running too fast to tell. Either way, Gretchen’s twin sister was never seen again.

Years later, after being thrown out of their house, Gretchen and Ansel find themselves in Live Oak, South Carolina, a place on the verge of becoming a ghost town. They move in with Sophia Kelly, a young and beautiful chocolatier owner who opens not only her home, but her heart to Gretchen and Ansel.

Yet the witch isn’t gone—it’s here, lurking in the forests of Live Oak, preying on Live Oak girls every year after Sophia Kelly’s infamous chocolate festival. But Gretchen is determined to stop running from witches in the forest, and start fighting back. Alongside Samuel Reynolds, a boy as quick with a gun as he is a sarcastic remark, Gretchen digs deeper into the mystery of not only what the witch is, but how it chooses its victims. Yet the further she investigates, the more she finds herself wondering who the real monster is, and if love can be as deadly as it is beautiful.

Today, SWEETLY arcs (Advanced Reading Copies, which are paperbacks of the book printed for reviewers/publishing industry people) arrived! And I freaked out and did a little dance with Space Dog and Alcott, who didn’t care nearly as much about the arcs as they did about the fact that I dropped a bag of dog treats on the floor.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the cover. Now, this is just the ARC, so that cover might not be final, but ISN’T IT THE BEST THING YOU’VE EVER SEEN? I mean, since the SISTERS RED cover which is also THE BEST THING YOU’VE EVER SEEN, right?

*continues dance of JOY*

I’ll be doing some arc giveaways starting in January!

Chronology question

First let me say that I found Sisters Red a couple of months ago through Melissa Marr's rec, and it was incredible. It was gritty and realistic, and in Scarlet, it portrayed a kind of female character I'm not used to seeing but definitely want more of. It was amazing to see Scarlet dedicated to this vocation/calling and for that to be portrayed in a validating way; she didn't have to change and want the things traditional females wanted in order to have a family and be loved. It was equally amazing to see your validation of Rose and her more traditional desires, while also showing that she was a strong woman who would and could take care of herself. Anyway, I'll end the fangirl squee now *grin*

If you don't mind me asking a couple of questions: Is Gretchen Scarlet's grandmother? I know it's connected to Sisters because the Reynolds' family shows up; I was trying to figure out exactly what the connection was and realized that Samuel sounded, at least off the top of my head, like Pa Reynolds name, and I know he and Scarlet's grandmother had a relationship so.. If I'm totally off the mark here, sorry!

One more question, and I may be totally off here too; did you intend for Scarlet to be portrayed as asexual? I know that while she liked Silas, she wasn't nearly as excited by him as the hunt, but I wasn't sure if that was just because she hadn't found the right person yet, or if she was more asexual? If I'm being totally honest, I'm hoping it's the latter; it is so bloody rare to see good asexual characters in lit.

Sisters Red is still my favourite of your covers, but this is also very mysterious and intriguing. You lucked out when it came to cover artists.

OMG I love that! It took me a second to see the face, but once I did it made it even more awesome. I really love the graphic style they're doing for your fairy tell retellings.

(btw in your chat a few weeks back you mentioned you never saw the cover for Vesper, so here's my jacket: http://jeffsampsonbooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Vesper-jkt-des10.jpg)
