Outlining Liveshow

So, if you have been wandering around these parts for any period of time, you probably know that I am a HUGE fan of outlining. HUGE. I outline everything– short stories, novels, essays, you name it.

I very frequently get asked about this process, and I’ve tried to explain, but…it’s sort of like your grandmother trying to explain how she makes her secret biscuit recipe. “Just throw in a little flour…oh, I don’t know how much, just till it feels right…what do you mean, you don’t know when it feels right? It just does.”

So, for next week’s liveshow, we’ll be outlining a novel together. I’ll have the premise and some ideas, and the chat will come up with everything to flesh the story out, and we’ll go through a mini version of the process complete with Scrivener, Post-Its, and legal pads.

Tuesday, May 22, 8:00pm EST. This chat might run a little longer than our usual hour, just warning you. CLICK to go to the Liveshow page!

Cover Reveal(s)!

So, if you come to liveshows, you’ve heard me say that cover changes are coming.

If you don’t come to liveshows…what’s wrong with you?

Anyhow, the long and short of it is that SISTERS RED and SWEETLY are getting new paperback covers to match FATHOMLESS’s hardback cover. There are a lot of reasons publishers change the covers of an already-published book: to revive the series, to reach a new audience, to market toward a specific crowd, etc. Which, if you ask me, are pretty damn good reasons.

BUT…I will be the first to admit, I was a little wary. I LOVE the original SISTERS RED and SWEETLY covers. And I was a little sad that there wouldn’t be a matching FATHOMLESS cover. So when the final covers for SWEETLY and FATHOMLESS came in the other day, I had my fingers crossed and was wishing and praying and hoping and–

AHHHHHHH THEY’RE SO GOOD I JUST CAN’T EVEN

(I don’t have the new SISTERS RED cover yet, but based on the fact that I want to eat these, I imagine it’ll be pretty fantastic.)

Only the paperbacks of SWEETLY and SISTERS RED are changing– I believe you’ll still be able to order the hardback with the original covers if you want. The new covers will be available in August!

Signed copies of PURITY

SO, PURITY’s release party is coming up! April 26th, 7pm, at the Alpharetta GA Barnes & Noble, to be exact. I hope you can come. There will be goodie bags, and not the crappy kind full of business cards and half-off coupons. The GOOD kind. With candy and STUFF.

So. You should come.

But if you can’t make it to the release party, you can still order a signed copy of PURITY from the bookstore. Just give them a call and they can take care of all of the ordering business over the phone. CLICK to go to the store website.

Experimentation

So if you’ve been following this blog or me on YouTube or twitter or wherever, you probably know that I’m not the biggest fan of self-publishing (or “indie” publishing, or whatever you want to call it).

There are a lot of reasons for this; the primary one being that I think most people self-publish for the wrong reasons, like because a book got rejected too much/their feelings got hurt by traditional publishers, or because they want to choose their cover, or because their BFF’s cousin’s friend Steve said self-publishing is awesome.

There are, however, some good reasons to self-publish. Say you’re writing a book about a very niche topic– the mating habits of certain butterflies, or a novel about kids at a chess competition that would only appeal to kids at a chess competition. Or maybe writing is more of a hobby to you, or you just want to see your book in print. Those are all good reasons to self-publish. Go for it. Self-pub it up.

But if you want a career as an author? In my opinion, traditional publishing is the way to go, especially in the young adult genre.

All that said, I’m finding myself in a strange middle ground as far as self-publishing goes. I write quickly– typically quicker than I can sell books– and while I’d likely never self-publish a novel, I am intrigued by the idea of releasing ebook short stories in-between novel releases.

Thus, I bring you to my experiment. Last night I put a short story up on Amazon, available for .99. TURN HERE is a 9k (longish) short story about a broken cell phone GPS, Jimmy Carter’s head, and true love. Also, there’s candy. It’s one of my favorite short stories, and I hope you (buy it and) enjoy it as much as I do.*

I made the cover myself (obviously). Look, people, I’m an author, not a graphic designer. I’m sorry. The story really is good though. Did I mention the candy?

If this experiment works out, I’m going to look into releasing a new longish short story every month. So. Ready. Set. COMMENCE EXPERIMENT.

CLICK to go to the Amazon page for TURN HERE. If you have a kindle, you can load the story there. If you have a computer, you can download a kindle program HERE to read. If you have a mobile device or iPad, download the kindle app to read there.

*This is the same short story that appeared in the anthology THE FIRST TIME (which is a wonderful collection), so if you’ve purchased that there’s no need to rebuy. Unless you want to. I’m not gonna stop you. I think you’re pretty.

Milk

Look at this milk. LOOK AT IT.

Do you see the date? The expiration date?
April 25th. ONE DAY after PURITY releases.

Now, granted, this is organic milk, and organic milk lasts a zillion years longer than the regular sort (something to do with the way it’s processed), but STILL.

Here are the things I am doing to prepare for PURITY’s release:

1) Trying to figure out how to tell my middle school students that they can come to the release party, but I’ll be reading what I affectionately call “the condom scene.”

2) Trying to figure out what to put in goodie bags for aforementioned release party.

3) Trying to decide if I want to do invitations. Long time followers will remember last year’s SWEETLY release invitation fiasco.

4) Eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

That last one really doesn’t count, because I eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on most occasions, including, but not limited to: Celebrations, Feeling Downtrodden, Finishing The Laundry, It’s Raining, It’s Sunny, My Arms Hurt, and I Found A Penny.

Anyway. The release party is April 26th at the Alpharetta Georgia Barnes and Noble, 7:30pm. BE THERE. Or at least eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in my honor.

The Girl Who Was On Fire

Things you should know:

1) There is an entire anthology of essays about THE HUNGER GAMES, each written by an awesome YA author.

2) A special movie edition of the anthology is being released next year.

3) I have an essay in the rerelease about Gale, and how he’s a cowboy and a knight and a badass.

More information HERE.
Cooking with JACKSON

Okay, people. I have to confess something.
I hate McDonalds. That’s not the confession, but I really hate McDonalds. And Burger King. And Wendy’s. I just don’t like fast food. I did at one point, but somewhere along the line I started realizing that the kitchens looked gross and the food looked gross and hardly contained any ACTUAL food and just…everything was gross. I never consider it an option for a meal, no matter how desperate, not because I’m super healthy or anything but just because…ew. Grossness. So generally, I don’t miss fast food at all.
Except…there is one thing I miss. I miss eating the McGriddle.
That is my confession.
For those of you unfamiliar with McDonald’s breakfast, the McGriddle is a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich that has two pancakes instead of a biscuit. It’s the perfect blend of salty and sweet. The perfect consistency. It’s delicious. It’s addictive. It’s got more chemicals than actual food in it, I’m sure, but it’s just SO GOOD. Yet on the rare occasion I got a McGriddle, I’d be thinking about the grossness of fast food in the back of my mind. It kept me from true McGriddle bliss.
UNTIL TODAY. The day when I finally decided to make my own McGriddle for breakfast. Several people requested I document this ADVENTURE, so here we go.

Get some sausage. This is Tayyib Chicken Sausage. The guy behind the company is Muslim, and thus can’t eat pork, but thought sausage smelled delicious…so he made the world’s best chicken sausage. For real. Also get some eggs and some cheese.

Now make some pancake batter. Use whatever recipe you like, but I actually think whole wheat makes for a heartier McGriddle.

Now take a crazy ass pan like this. Okay, technically you don’t need a crazy ass pan. But 1) It keeps your McGriddle pancakes the same, perfect size and 2) ANIMALS ON PANCAKES.

Start the sausage cooking. Pour some pancake batter in your crazy ass pan. And then take some maple syrup– REAL maple syrup, btw, which is ten thousand times more delicious than some corn syrup in a lady-shaped bottle–

–and pour a tiny bit on top of your pancakes. Less than a teaspoon will do it.

Start the eggs. Finish the sausage. Put a little cheese on top of the sausage. Flip the pancakes. Do all of this in whatever order makes sense to you, then ASSEMBLE YOUR MCGRIDDLE.

Oh, homemade McGriddle. You are just as delicious as McDonalds, and you contain real food. It’s MAGIC.

Y U NO MAKE VIDEOS?

There hasn’t been a new video in 11 days.

I know. Really. I’ve gotten the emails requesting I make a new one. I’ve gotten the (one) email threatening to return my books to Borders (ha) if there’s no new video soon.

It’s not my fault though. It’s FATHOMLESS’s fault. See?

Those are my FATHOMLESS notes– I didn’t black them out because they contain state secrets, but rather, because that’s just how I deal with editorial notes. I black out all the stuff that doesn’t matter and leave the stuff that does, so I know what to focus on. On the other pages there’s much, much more that matters, alas.

And FATHOMLESS is due um…now, pretty much. And as much as I love making videos, my job is writing– videos are something I do for fun. I mean, not that I don’t write for fun too. I do. It’s just videos are the sort of fun that doesn’t pay and I’ve gotten really attached to eating and sleeping indoors.

So. Yeah. There’s that.

Mirrored from JacksonPearce.com.
